SABIC, a global leader in the chemicals industry, announced that its Functional Forms facility in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, has been certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS scheme to supply a new range of LEXAN™ Film and sheet products based on certified renewable raw materials. The new film and sheet products join the company's existing TruckLink™ response to the growing global demand for further sustainable material solutions in an increasingly circular plastics economy.

“We are proud to be the first company in the industry to receive ISCC PLUS certification for renewable polycarbonate-based films and sheets,” said Bart Kiekens, European Electrical and Electronic Films Division Head of SABIC’s Functional Forms business in Bergen. . "This provides our LEXAN film and sheet customers with an effective alternative to enhance their environmental balance and meet ambitious sustainability goals."

ISCC PLUS certification recognizes the implementation of a mass balance accounting system that tracks the flow of materials in a complex supply chain from raw materials to final products by following predefined transparent rules. These rules then define whether a product can be classified as renewable or circular. For SABIC, this means that for every ton of renewable or circular raw materials and alternative fossil feedstocks added to the production process, approximately one ton of output material can be classified as renewable or circular. The mass balance approach also allows OEMs to document and quantify the sustainability of applications made from these certified materials.

Alda Shabanaj, European Film and Mass Transit Product Manager at SABIC, added: “Our new bio-based LEXAN film and sheet products are manufactured using polycarbonate resin, partly derived from second-generation raw materials that do not directly compete with the food chain.” . "The resulting materials can help our customers create value through durable and recyclable applied solutions across multiple industries. This is what we call Vital Chemistry™."

SABIC's innovative LEXAN polycarbonate film and sheet products are based on certified renewable raw materials and are produced at the Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands) production site. They are available worldwide and are targeted for demanding applications in a variety of different markets, including construction and construction, electrical and electronics, automotive, mass transit and specialty glass.
